Photo Story Friday - Matty!

I've posted a lot of pictures of my younger brother, Matt, but I haven't really said much about him. Until yesterday.

Cammy asked how old he is. He is 19 years old, physically. However, he is developmentally delayed (also physically handicapped, legally blind, and slightly autistic), so his mental age is much younger. I argue with my mom about it because she says it's 7 or 8; I give him much more credit than that and say it's about 12. He acts like a teenager! He is also the sweetest, most caring person I know, and he unconditionally loves everyone he meets. He is entirely nonjudgmental, and so beautifully innocent. My family revolves around him, without a doubt. We all go out of our way to protect him, while still trying to teach him to be independent. It's hard to strike a balance there, but his fun personality makes the struggle worth it.

So, my story about Matt is my first time doing Photo Story Friday. I was shooting Matt while he was sitting at his desk, listening to a book on tape, one of his favorite things to do. For this picture, I held the camera up above my head to get a different angle. When he saw was I was doing, he looked puzzled, but before I could explain, he threw his arms up in the air, like mine were. I couldn't help but laugh, which made him smile. And thus, a cute picture was born.

I love that you took the picture anyway. It captures the fun and unpredictability of having him around. Your family is so blessed to have him!

I'm so happy that he brings so much joy to your lives.
I'm sure there were (and probably still are) rough moments, but the pure innocence and joy that you get to experience is no doubt amazing.
Awesome photo, he looks so happy!

Thanks, everyone, for the great comments. I get nervous telling people about Matt because I get very upset by rude comments. I should have known there would be no such thing here. (Bloggers are so open-minded and accepting.) Matt really IS a great kid, we ARE very blessed, and ditto everything Lena said. :)

What an amazing example of goodness you have in your brother! It's too bad we can't all take a page from his book. The world would most certainly be a better place.

Love the pic and the story behind it.

I love that he was mocking/mimicing you and you both got such a kick out of it. I bet he's very fun to be around.
