2 Friday memes... on Saturday!

If you haven't done this favor for me yet...

I am getting married next year, and I have entered a contest to win a photography package for my wedding. In order to win, I need comments! Go to this blog post (it is the photographer's blog) and comment on my story. You have to fill out the entire comment form in order to submit it.

Please do this for me. It will only take a minute, maybe two. But it would mean so much to me. And the deadline is midnight Sunday morning. Thank you!

I haven't done this meme in 4 weeks! It's one of my favorite challenges, but my weekends have been really busy lately. I managed to plan ahead this time so that I could do some editing. Boy, was I glad I did, when I saw this photo! It's just adorable! It's a great photo to begin with, just a little dark. Fairly easy to "fix."

I just love my color edit.

Photo Roulette Friday & lots of stuff

Lots of fun stuff going on today!

First...A favor for me?

I am getting married next year, and I have entered a contest to win a photography package for my wedding. In order to win, I need comments! Go to this blog post (it is the photographer's blog) and comment on my story. You have to fill out the entire comment form in order to submit it.

Third...

Cara over at Mischief and Laughs is starting up a new meme called Photo Roulette Friday. If you really enjoyed Sami's RAW(e) theme this week, which was 2(6), then you'll LOVE Photo Roulette Friday! Cara will post a number, no, 2 numbers, and we'll post the photo that we find using those numbers.

Confused? Keep reading.

For the first week, she is starting us off with 10(8),
meaning the 10th folder, 8th photo.

*Quick sidebar: I have a very serious organization system for my photos. First, they are split by year - 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 (anything earlier than 07 is combined into one folder). Within that, they are split by groups of 3 months - Jan/Feb/Mar, Apr/May/June, etc. Within that, they are split by date or event - May 15: graduation, June 30: zoo, etc. If necessary, I also have them split within each folder by camera - Nikon, Samsung, or Canon (more so within the last few weeks).

So, I have a lot of flexibility here, finding my 10th folder. I dug into the archives again, because I like memories - I went into my 2007 folder, which is simply split by date, starting with July (because I didn't have my own camera before that). The 10th folder is November 8th, and the 8th photo is this:

A beach photo. What a shocker.

I'm also submitting this to SOOC Saturday, which is run by Slurping Life.

Before & After - A Crazy Edit

Before:

This is a photo of a rose and the shadow of its bouquet, sitting on our deck. I knew I wanted to do a crazy edit with this photo, because that is the theme this week for Simplicity's Photography Blog Hop. However, I've been wondering since I saw the theme: What does she consider crazy? I've always wanted to mess around with reverse black & white, so I went with that for -kinda- crazy.

My steps:
-crop (I used an 8x10 ratio, but I wish I had cut off more on the right side.)
-levels & flatten
-gradient map: reverse black and white & flatten
-PW Sharpen This on rose and edges of shadow & flatten
-signature & flatten & save

Black and White Wednesday - A Missed Opportunity

the long road

Black and White Wednesday is run by Lisa over at
The Long Road to China.

I missed this opportunity when I was at Silver Sands State Park in Milford, CT. There is a sandbar that leads straight to this island, but it is covered at high tide. Duh. So, I'm at this beach, looking at the island, for a good 45 minutes before I finally start walking the sandbar toward the island. Of course, as I am walking, I can see the waterline creeping inward, flooding the crevices between the rocks and sending the birds scampering away. I kinda kept ignoring it, until with one big whoosh, it covered the sandbar completely.

I was so disappointed that I had missed my chance to walk to the island. Fortunately, as I walked slowly back toward the main land, I realized that if I had indeed gone over earlier and made it to the island, I probably would have gotten stuck ON the island as the tide came in, covering my way back instead of my way in.

Oh well. At least I got some great photos. And I can always go back.

RAW(e) - 2(6)

I think Sami likes ((parentheses)).

This week's theme is 2(6), meaning the 6th photo in the 2nd folder. Get it?
2nd folder (6)th photo.

Because I love my archived photos, and because Sami didn't give TOO specific directions on where to find this "2nd folder," I went back to my 2009 folder. The 2nd folder in there is from a trip to NYC in January. I went with Jon to see the play The Little Mermaid, which was AWESOME, btw.

The little rocker kid with the hood and the leather jacket played Flounder. He was so generous with signing autographs and letting people take photos. The little girl was ogling over him, and I kinda think her mom was, too.

The memories from that night -the music, the atmosphere, the gorgeous hotel- make me pretty darn happy. Happy that I can easily embrace my inner child at a Disney play.

i heart faces Challenge - Purple

My favorite color!
But shockingly, I don't have any photos of PURPLE with a face.

No wait, I have one! It doesn't have a whole lot of purple, but it's there!

Moving on to some questions for Getting to Know You, run by MannLand5.

Getting to know YOU

1. Thong or Granny Panties? Thong. But not stringy. My preferred style overall is boycut or tangas. (And I had to look up the correct term for those.)

2. If you see a guy with his fly down, do you tell him? Nope.

3. Spanx or no Spanx? Yes.

4. Do you sleep in your sheets? I use fitted but I hate loose sheets. They get all tangled. And I get cold very easily, so I always sleep with a blanket/quilt/comforter, sometimes 2.

5. What is your favorite Disney character? Ariel, the Little Mermaid, easily. Thanks to my Fairy Tales class in college, I know the differences between the Disney version and the real version, but I will always love Ariel above all others.

6. Dream vacation spot? A trip around the world in 80 days. Kinda corny, but I want to travel the world. I want to see everything, taste all the food, experience the culture and the climates, photograph the historic sites... But I'm not stupid. I'd have to be rolling in dough for that kind of vacation.

7. What is your dream job? Honestly, I don't have one. I know I am setting myself up for lots of harsh words here, but it's true. I want to try my hand at everything. I want to stay in Admissions for a bit. I want to teach for a bit, either elementary or adolescent. I want to own my own business for a bit. I want to work for NASA for a bit. I want to be a news reporter for a bit. I want to try it all!

8. Who is your hero and why? Matt. My little brother. (Although he's not so little anymore! He's taller than me and turns 20 in just 2 weeks.) He is my hero because he is the strongest, kindest, most resilient person I know. I can't even try to imagine my life without him. And I try to be like him - strong, kind, resilient. It's hard as hell to be so unconditionally loving.

Head on over to Keeli's blog to get the questions so you can answer them for yourself! And, if you do, let me know in a comment so I can read your answers, too.

Color Splash Sunday - Jewelry/Accessories

Sorry this is up so late.
I promise, I am NOT
trying to make a habit of
being late for my own meme.

Photobucket

Color splash photos are those that have been converted to black and white, but one object (or several small objects) has (have) been left colored. Sometimes, it's easy to just isolate your colored object and you're done. Other times, more editing is required, such as adjusting color levels/light/shadow/etc.

This week's theme is Jewelry and Accessories, courtesy of Sam over at Raising Rida.

One of my rules is that you can't reuse photos. So would you all mutiny if I -sorta- reused a photo? I used the photo below for the June Photo Hunt, but I never actually posted here, on this blog. And it fits the theme perfectly. I wear these 3 bracelets everyday. The purple one is from my mom, the black one is from Jon, and I haven't taken the yellow Live Strong one off in ... years!

YouCapture - Black & White

This is the Canon that I was able to borrow from my future SIL, Melissa.

This is my dad's Nikon.

I took both of these using my Samsung point-and-shoot. Yea, I got it back! I've hardly been using it, though, because I am so nervous that it is going to malfunction again. But I did a lot of experimenting and comparing with all the different cameras. I learned that my point-and-shoot has a manual mode in which I can adjust white balance, ISO, and other settings. I also learned that I prefer to shoot in manual focus over auto focus, which is one huge disadvantage to the Samsung - I am at the mercy of the auto focus. And I learned that I am a Nikon girl. Sure, the Canon is 'easier' to use, but my hands are much more comfortable handling the Nikon. My fingers adeptly turn knobs and push buttons, whereas they fumble with the Canon, even after a few weeks learning about it. (No offense to the Canon girls out there!)

Black and White Wednesday - The BEACH

the long road

Black and White Wednesday is run by Lisa over at
The Long Road to China.

This beautiful view is from Sherwood Island State Park in Westport, CT. It's not really an island, more like a peninsula. It is the only shore park in all of Fairfield County, and it is one of the oldest parks in CT. I LOVE the beach, so I LOVE the beach parks. This one was no exception! There is also a nature center here. However, the most memorable part of this park was the Living Memorial. There is a spot in this park, on the very edge of the peninsula, where there is a direct view to lower Manhattan...

My fellow New Yorkers know what that means. 8 years and 10 months ago, on September 11th, 2001, the park-goers at Sherwood Island saw a column of smoke rising from the city. I can never imagine how scared and confused they must have felt, seeing the smoke and then hearing what happened.

That was a tragic event that deeply touched New Yorkers, from far upstate all the way to Battery Park, and still affects us today.

Color Splash Sunday - Ice Cream

Photobucket

Color splash photos are those that have been converted to black and white, but one object (or several small objects) has (have) been left colored. Sometimes, it's easy to just isolate your colored object and you're done. Other times, more editing is required, such as adjusting color levels/light/shadow/etc.

This week's theme is ice cream! Here in America, today is ACTUALLY National Ice Cream Day!

This is my favorite flavor EVER. There is no better combination than chocolate, caramel, and marshmellow, with some fudge fish on the side. I can eat this entire carton by myself. In one night. Which I did, after taking this picture. (Which is why I probably won't be able to fit into a wedding dress in 13 months.)

I got this idea back when we did pink objects and Marlis splashed the cutest photo ever - her daughter eating some strawberry ice cream. So I am really looking forward to seeing some different flavors of ice cream today!

Textures & Actions

I was turned onto textures and actions back in mid-March, and I basically taught myself how to use them, using trial-and-error and online tutorials, as well as doing lots of late night research. I spent countless hours finding new blogs, reading tips, looking at before-and-after comparisons, and downloading free stuff.

One of the blogs that I found that was extremely helpful was the Daily Window, written by Lynda. She has been writing about textures and actions the past few days, and she has challenged us to edit her photo with our favorite textures and actions.

Here is the sooc shot:

Before I even opened this in pse, I first applied noiseware to it. Ashley over at Ramblings & Photos has recommended this program at least twice, so you know it's good. Now, I use it on almost every photo I edit. Sometimes, the noise is inevitable. If I don't like that the noiseware softens some of the details, I then use the Sharpen This action from Pioneer Woman to hone in on specific details I wanted to sharpen. (I've got a pse version of her actions, but I can't seem to find the link. I'm pretty sure Coffeeshop and Texas Chicks worked together to recreate PW actions for pse.)

When I opened it in pse, I immediately used a Levels layer mask to adjust the colors to my own liking. Then, I applied two of my favorite actions. This first edit is done using the Butterscotch Vintage action from Coffeeshop.

This second edit was done using the Morning Cartoons action from Amy McMaster.

I NEVER (okay, hardly ever) apply an action and leave it 'as is,' or 'out of the box,' as Lynda calls it. As I've pointed out before, there is no real right or wrong in photo editing. Most of the time, what looks good is based upon a person's personal preferences and style. If 3 people take the same photo and edit it, there will be 3 different end results. And all 3 of them will look good. So, after applying an action, you definitely want to look at each layer and adjust them according to your own taste. Make it look the way you want it to look.

For my last edit, I didn't use any actions, just textures. I get all of my textures from Shadowhouse Creations because they are all free and they are so creative. I used two of his textures called Old World Painting 2 and RVT (Rustic Vintage) Green.

I have 3 layers on this photo, bottom to top: OWP2 set at screen mode with 38% opacity, OWP2 set at overlay mode with 50% opacity, and RVTG set at overlay mode with 75% opacity. On the first and third layers, I also masked out some of the effect over the rose and the wet leaves.

Here is a side by side comparison of my 3 edits.

Which one do you like best??

Head over to the Daily Window to check out more Lynda's tips and resources, and to try out her challenge for yourself!
